Eat, Act, Pray - August

Fast food, fast fashion, fast news. As we get faster, we can do things in more reckless, harmful ways.

There’s great wisdom in the idea behind the sabbath.

Sabbath has always been about more than just resting. At its core it’s about social justice. It’s about ensuring that workers can’t be exploited 7 days a week. It’s about ensuring that we give the land we use to grow our food a break and don’t overuse it. It's about ensuring that we take a break from participating in a consumer society.

In such a world we can find ourselves seeking fast change. There are so many things we can see that need changing in the world, that we want to act on and to speak out about, but it’s all too easy to get activist burn out. 

Incidentally, our friend Sarah Corbett, over at the craftivists has just written a book about this.

To be effective change makers we also need to take the time to rest, reflect and to care for each other.

So, this month is going to be our sabbath month for Eat, Act, Pray. Most of you will be in between things, like school or university years. Perhaps you’re getting results or making big decisions about what's next? It’s an appropriate month to slow down and take stock. As such, there’s no action this month, aside from the act of sitting, eating and praying together. Resting in the company of friends.

Pray

Pray for each other, for the things in our lives that are tiring, for the decisions we’re making and the changes that are happening in our lives. Pray for the space to rest and be refreshed.
